Council Appointments to Committees

Council members are appointed to different Committees of Council alongside members of the public, members of Town of Mahone Bay and representatives from different organisations. Councillors also serve on external committees such as the Municipal Joint Services Board, AREA, REMO, South Shore Housing Action Coalition, Joint Accessibility Committee and more.

Asset Management Committee

The overall purpose of the Asset Management Committee as determined by Council is to provide leadership and engagement activities to ensure public assets are managed in a proactive and sustainable manner for current and future generations. Terms of Reference

Audit Committee

Cemetery Committee

The Cemetery Committee is established through the Town's Cemetery By-law. The committee's responsibilities include approving title transfers of cemetery lots, setting criteria for memorials, approving changes placement of structures and objects in both of the Town's cemeteries, establishing fees, rules and regulations by recommendation to Town Council and advising staff concerning the care of the cemeteries. Climate + Environment Advisory Committee

This committee provides leadership and guidance on climate change mitigation, adaptation, and environmental stewardship initiatives. The committee provides feedback and engages in community outreach on issues and projects related to environmental sustainability within the Town. Terms of Reference

Finance Committee

Heritage Advisory Commitee

The Heritage Advisory Committee is established under the Town’s Heritage Property By-law, pursuant to the Nova Scotia Heritage Property Act. The Committee is responsible for identifying potential heritage properties for registration, reviewing heritage applications and making recommendations to Council, reviewing applications to make changes to heritage properties and reviewing applications to de-register heritage properties. Oakland Lake Watershed Advisory Committee

The Watershed Committee is established under the Nova Scotia Environment Act – Oakland Lake Watershed Protected Water Area. The responsibilities of the committee include reviewing correspondence received from owners of properties within the Oakland Lake Watershed Protected Water Area, matters referred by Council and making recommendations to Council with respect to the Watershed Area. Planning Advisory Committee

The purpose of the Planning Advisory Committee is to advise Council respecting the preparation or amendment of planning documents and respecting planning matters generally. Terms of Reference

Police Advisory Board

The Police Advisory Board is established to comply with the requirements of the Nova Scotia Police Act. The function of an advisory board is to provide advice to Council in relation to the enforcement of law, the maintenance of law and order and the prevention of crime in the municipality, but the advisory board shall not exercise jurisdiction relating to complaints, discipline, personnel conduct or the internal management of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Policy + Strategy Committee

The Policy & Strategy Committee is established to provide an opportunity for debate and discussion on by-law and policy review, strategy, and other matters which Council determine would benefit from further discussion.

The responsibilities of the committee include reviewing policies and by-laws of the Town of Mahone bay which have been referred to the committee and consideration of matters before Council which have been referred to the committee for further discussion.

The Committee consists of ALL COUNCIL plus the CAO and Deputy CAO.

Nominating Committee (Internal)

The Nominating Committee is newly established in 2025. The Committee meets to discuss applications/public nominations and provide nominations to Council on various public roles or designations appointed or assigned by Council, including but not limited to public members on committees of Council and volunteer award recipients.
